University Town (also called Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center) is 3 metro stops
from Pazhou (about 10 minutes by metro).
It is on the island with 2 metro stations on No.4 metro line. However, metro and public
bus are the main transport from this island to other places, since there is few taxi on
the island. The limit is that No.4 metro line would just open for use from 6 a.m. to 11
p.m.
If you would like to find a budget hotel close to Pazhou, with quiet surrounding, and
need not go out for nightlife, University Town would be a good choice.
There are two types of accommodations on this island, one is the really cheap hostels,
US$10—15 per night and they will not increase the rates during Canton Fair. Since they
are refurbished from the residential houses, facilities are simple, and some are
outdated, you would not expect the shuttle bus to Pazhou. What’s more they lie in the
streets which are a little hard to find. The other type is well facilitated, with
shuttle bus to Pazhou, whose room rate would range from US$60 to US$130.
Living near campus, it is easy to find the student resource for interpreter or
translator. Daily life here is also convenient, western restaurant, coffee shop, Muslim
restaurant, supermarket, banks are available on this island.
Xinzao
The small town Xinzao, one metro stop from University Town (5 stops from Pazhou), is
also included into this location by us. There is just one hotel called Jun Yue Hostel
which is able to receive foreign guests. The room rates start from US$10 for single room.
Xinzao is a traditional town without much fun and entertainment, but quiet. It is a
small town; you’ll be able to cover most of the town center within 20 minutes walk.
Further into the village, it is industrial area. Immigrant workers in the factories
would come to town for daily life, so the consumption there would not be high, but
mainly for medium and low-end goods. Internet cafés are available in town.
Staying in Xinzao, you would be able to feel the local style of living, such as the
street market by the river, selling Chinese herb tea, fruits, cheap clothes, etc.
There are other cheap accommodations in this town, but most of whom are not be able to
receive foreign guest, and you could not expect any basic facilities and services, but
just a bed for sleep. If you don’t mind the living condition, and you are curious about
the so called “really cheap accommodation”, there are some guesthouses (local
residential house) near the street market by the river, staring from RMB20 (US$3) per
night.

Take airport express Line 5 and get off Haizhu Square Station, fare is RMB20 (25km from
Xinzao); then by metro, 30min., fare is RMB6, or by taxi, 40min., fare is RMB70 to
Xinzao metro station.
From Xinzao metro station to Xinzao town:
Come out from Exit A1, Xinzao metro station, then take a motorbike for 3 minutes to town
center, fare is RMB2.
Or walk about 5 minutes, then take a bus for one stop to town center. You’ll find Jun
Yue Hostel right across to the bus stop.
